KOMATSU PC1250 demonstrates versatility for Celtic Energy
14/01/2005

The demands of an excavation area comprising some 45 hectares has led Walters Plant Hire to select a Komatsu PC1250 excavator for a site operated by Celtic Energy.

Established in 1982, Walters Plant Group currently owns a plant fleet of 250 items offering a range of services in property development, civil engineering, demolition and plant hire.  As part of their expansion, they acquired Celtic Energy  in July, a leading coal mining company in Wales, which delivers 2 million tonnes of coal a year.

Investing in their long term venture with Celtic Energy, Walters Plant Hire purchased the Komatsu PC1250 Excavator to remove over burden of rock and coal.  It is one of the largest machines supplied by Marubeni Komatsu, the UK’s leading distributor of construction equipment.  The Komatsu PC1250 is in operation at the Margam Opencast site which has an excavation rate of 90,000 cubic metres with a coal output of 9,000 tonnes per week to industrial markets situated in Westbury, Derbyshire and Rugby.

Previously, the Komatsu PC3000 large shovel was used, but conditions on the site made it unsuitable for optimal digging.  The Komatsu PC1250 was selected for operation as it is an ideal size, offering flexibility in the geographically complex sites typically found in South Wales.  Other
Komatsu machinery in use includes a Komatsu 240 Face Shovel for coal loading and two Komatsu 470 Front End Loaders for processing and loading.

Adrian Helmore, Assistant Manager of Celtic Energy commented on the Komatsu PC1250 as, “A prime mover, chosen because of its flexibility and versatility.  Komatsu has an excellent reputation for service and maintenance amongst the Walters.  The excavator is a superb acquisition as it does much more than we could hope for.”

Marubeni Komatsu is pleased to keep customers satisfied, as much time is invested in creating the right product features.  The Komatsu PC1250 not only has the largest digging force and bucket capacity, it also has a strengthened boom with a two-mode setting and a shockless switch.  Environmental concerns are also attended to with the option to reduce fuel consumption by 13% in Economy Mode, and a low emission engine that does not sacrifice on the productivity power.  A computerised monitor controller keeps the user informed on various aspects of the machine condition.  Komatsu endeavours to enhance reliability and durability of their machines.
