Neway grow with Komatsu excavators 16/08/2004
Excavators from the Marubeni-Komatsu range are at the centre of the development of a civils contractor that has grown from a single owner/driver to a 40 employee, £2 million operation in only 3 and a half years.
Neway Construction was started by John Kind in March, 2001 to coincide with the launch of a new company, Winvic Construction. John had been working as an owner/driver of a single excavator but the opportunity to take on the contract for the groundworks of Winvic’s new-build 435,000 square foot HQ in Northampton provided the impetus to start Neway Construction. Early in the development of Neway, John decided that one of the key factors in growing the business was the quality and reliability of his plant. Recognising that his existing supplier did not provide the back-up service that he required, John turned to Marubeni-Komatsu, the sole supplier of the Komatsu range of construction equipment in the UK.
John took delivery of his first Komatsu machine in July, 2002, a PW130-6 wheeled excavator with a split boom. A month later he purchased a PC130-6 crawler excavator, followed by two PC 210-7 excavators in 2003. The latest addition to his Komatsu fleet is a PC130-7 excavator, delivered in July, 2004, and one of the newest additions to Komatsu’s Dash 7 series, offering net horsepower of 66 kW 88 HP @ 2,200 rpm, an operating weight of 13,000kg and a bucket capacity of 0.8m³.
For John, it is the service that he gets from Marubeni-Komatsu that sets them apart from other plant suppliers – “We would not change now. What really impresses me is the back-up and after-sales service that we get. The quality of the machinery is excellent – very good track wear, economic fuel consumption and no problems with wear and tear on the other parts. We never really need to do anything in terms of maintenance other than servicing when we make sure that we use all genuine Komatsu parts.”
Now in their fourth year of business, Neway Construction have a number of impressive contracts under their belt including the 750,000 square foot development of the Brackmills Warehouse in Northampton and a national programme to conduct the groundworks for new mobile ‘phone aerial bases throughout the UK. Their latest project is at Prologis Park near Coventry, a multi-million pound business park development on the site of the old Keresely Colliery Homefire Plant and the company has also recently started work on another business park development for Prologis in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
The latest addition to Neway’s offering is the setting up of Neway Plant Hire which sources additional Komatsu equipment, not only for their own projects but also for other construction companies.
