First Komatsu rigid dump trucks for RMC
26/11/2002

RMC Aggregates (South West) has ordered a trio of Komatsu HD405-6 rigid dump trucks from Redditch based Marubeni-Komatsu which joins a pair of Komatsu wheel loaders that have each clocked-up over 20,000 trouble-free hours.

The first 40 tonne payload machine has recently been delivered to RMC's Wick Quarry near Bristol where it is hauling blasted limestone on an approximately 2 km round trip between face and crusher.

Commenting on the choice of Komatsu, quarry manager Chris Riddick said: "I first went to see an HD405 working on another site and was impressed with its smooth suspension, tight turning circle and overall compact dimensions. We therefore arranged to try a unit here at Wick which, in conjunction with an Optimum Fleet Recommendation, resulted in the decision to place an order with Marubeni. Our operators particularly highlighted the Komatsu's overall performance, smooth gear change and comfortable ride compared with a competitor's machine we tested at the same time."

The HD405-6 is powered by a Komatsu 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine developing 364 kW (488 hp) @ 2000 rpm coupled to a 7-speed, K-ATOMICS torqflow transmission which automatically selects the right gear depending on vehicle speed, engine rpm and selected shift position.

The machine has a class-leading minimum turning radius of just 7.2 m, made possible by the use of a MacPherson strut type front suspension with a special A-frame connecting the front wheels to the main chassis.

Other features include an oil-cooled, multiple disc retarder, hydro-pneumatic suspension and a spacious and quiet operator environment.
