Komatsu PC240-8 excavator keeps Yorkshire harbours in ship shape 30/10/2007
Scarborough Borough Council has taken delivery of a new PC240-8, which has been specially adapted for dredging, clearing and maintaining the ports and harbours in the North Yorkshire areas.
The machine, which will be working in Scarborough and Whitby harbours, was purchased from the UK’s sole distributor of Komatsu, Marubeni-Komatsu Ltd. It was chosen following a tendering process in which the Komatsu was agreed to be the most economic solution for their needs.
The dash 8’s improved engine power, which meets EU Stage IIIA emission regulations, is perfect for the harsh environment that it will be operating in. Working in sea water and digging sand, silt and stones on a daily basis, calls for a reliable piece of equipment.
As with operating any machinery, the operator needs to be completely aware of the safety of himself and others around him. The rear view camera which is fitted as standard to the PC240-8, allows him to be aware of such challenges and the enlarged mirrors, also fitted as standard, meet the new ISO visibility standards.
The excavator works on a floating pontoon which means all of the work is done under water and out of sight. However, constant submersion in water means even more pressure on the bearings and pins of the bucket. For this reason, Scarborough Borough Council is intending to experiment with sealed bearings in the hope of increasing the life span of its components.
Capt. Bill Estill, Port Manager at Whitby and Scarborough Harbours explains his reasons for choosing the PC240-8.
“We’ve had a good working relationship with Marubeni-Komatsu for nearly 15 years. This new machine replaces another Komatsu PC240 which has given us a long and reliable service. Regular greasing and checks will be carried out to the machine on a daily basis, but we’ve also entered into a maintenance agreement for additional back up, should we need it.”
The PC240-8 will be available to hire for contracts in the East Coast of England and Scotland, please contact Whitby and Scarborough Harbours for further information. Tel: 01947 602 354 or Fax: 01947 600 380
